Packaging for Safe Transit: Protect Your Cargo Every Mile

Most transit damage is not caused by an accident. It is caused by ordinary vibration, ordinary stacking and ordinary handling acting on packaging that was never designed for a journey. The good news is that this makes it largely preventable, and usually for very little money.

Start with what actually happens to a consignment on the road. It vibrates continuously for hours. It is loaded and unloaded at least twice, sometimes by hand. Things are placed on top of it. It may sit in a warehouse overnight between legs. Packaging that survives a shelf in a shop will not necessarily survive that, because it was never asked to.

The first principle is that the box should carry the load, not the contents. If a carton flexes when you press it, whatever is inside is taking the weight of everything stacked above. Double-wall board for anything heavy or travelling far is the single cheapest improvement most shippers can make, and it costs a fraction of one damaged consignment.

The second is that empty space is the enemy. Contents that can move will move, for the entire journey, and the damage that results looks like impact damage but is really thousands of small ones. Fill voids properly. Equally, do not overfill to the point where the carton bulges — a bulging box cannot be stacked squarely and becomes the weak point in the whole pallet.

Third, seal so the box stays closed under vibration rather than merely looking closed. Tape across the seam and along the edges. A single strip down the middle opens up under sustained movement, usually somewhere nobody is watching.

Fourth, palletise where volume justifies it. A properly wrapped pallet is handled by machine, moves as one unit and is far less likely to be dropped, dragged or restacked badly than thirty loose cartons. It also loads and unloads in minutes rather than an hour, which matters if waiting time is being charged.

Fifth, label for the people who will actually handle it. Delivery address on the outside, on more than one face. Fragile or this-way-up markings where they will be seen while the box is being lifted, not on the bottom. A packing list inside, so a damaged outer does not turn into a dispute about what was in it.

Some cargo needs more than good boxing, and the important thing is to say so at booking rather than to hope. Fabric rolls should not be stacked under dense freight. Glass and precision equipment need loading that limits vibration, which changes how the vehicle is packed. Anything unusually heavy for its size needs to be declared, because it determines where in the load it can sit. A transporter who knows what is in the consignment can plan around it; one who does not will load it as general freight, and reasonably so.

Finally, photograph consignments before dispatch, particularly high-value ones. It takes a minute and it settles any later question about what condition goods left in. Most claims that turn difficult do so because neither side can evidence the starting point.

None of this is exotic. It is the difference between packaging designed for storage and packaging designed for a journey, and on a long lane that difference shows up every time.
